Teenagers and Graffiti

Graffiti art is about the expression of a person towards what has been affected in their life for instance the current issues such as financial problem, family problem, depression and other. Based on this behavior, it will producing the delinquent behavior of a person especially the teenagers.

Teenagers are often participated in graffiti vandalism due to the delinquency behavior. They tends to rebel and expressed their expression and moods.Other than that, the vandalism graffiti also can be classified as the self-expression vandalism. The vandals believes that their action are harmless. But then, in reality is graffiti vandalism hurts everyone.

Graffiti vandalism often used to exposed the territory of a group and they often used tagging as the mark for their own territory. The involvement of group of teenagers in graffiti vandalism is due to goaded by friends for excitement and release their own expressions. Graffiti as a tools for recreation among teenagers

The graffiti arts are significant in the context of leisure and recreation. The graffiti arts are influence by the factor of social inclusion regarding leisure and recreation activities. Even though the graffiti arts has been considered as the negative behaviour that describe certain population or communities that have delinquency in behaviour especially teenagers, but then it is consider as a tools to harmonized and at the same time this kind of activity will cure the delinquent behaviour. Graffiti art also will provide an opportunities for the communities to use the time wisely instead of involving themselves in doing crime and others. Other than that, graffiti arts also give the opportunities for the certain countries especially urban area or suburban area to attract the local or foreign tourist to come and gain profit for instance in Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru. 

Therefore, there are some of the  action need to be taken to encourage the teenagers stop the graffiti vandalism. 

a) Provide some walls at the public area and park 

This kind of action may encourage the teenagers to express their behaviour and expression. Other than that, they can fulfill their leisure time by doing this kind of recreation. 

b) Create an event for the communities regarding drawing and involvement of arts 

This event can encourage the communities especially teenagers so that they can show their talents on drawing and arts to the public and at the same time, it will generate the income fore the certain area who did this events  

We need to encourage the communities so that they have concern on the graffiti vandalism and more appreciating arts so that they will be more harmony.

Problems regarding graffiti vandalism

Assalamualaikum and good evening everyone. 

As we know, Graffiti vandalism has been spread through out the certain quarter of the world including Malaysia especially in urban area or the other suburban area such as Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Seremban, Klang and Penang.

Graffiti is consider as the serious vandalism that widely occurred around the world. According to Paper (2015) he said that the graffiti is an activity that are consider as destroying the public property without the permission from the government agencies. This is due to the fact that, most of the communities nowadays tends to have delinquent behaviour as they need to balance their life but then, they are involving themselves in graffiti activities.

In Malaysia, especially in the capital city such as Kuala Lumpur,Penang and Ipoh, graffiti has occurred as an arts that can attract huge number of foreign visitors, in order to increase the income of our country, reduce crime and also to control the delinquent behaviour among the communities. (Shobri, Sakip, & Daud, 2017). Unfortunately, in certain parts of positive impact of graffiti arts, there are some negative impact that are affecting the life of the communities. The local authorities or the owner of the building frequently having the same problems in doing the maintenance on the buildings due to the existence of graffiti arts.

Besides, the public perception regarding the graffiti art are refer to the communities especially teenagers who are having delinquent behaviour. In Malaysia, the graffiti arts are actively occurred in urban area for instance; Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Penang. But all these activities has been spreading into the other small suburban. Although this kind of activity has been spreading and certain group of public will think that graffiti is a negative activity, but then are huge number of the followers who are actively involved in graffiti arts throughout the peninsular.


This is where the investigation are made to identify the factor that will influence the social contribution in graffiti arts from the view of leisure and recreation. The factor will considering the social, economy and the environment in the study area. The factor are influencing the social contribution in graffiti arts are identify such as leisure time used, demographic, culture, behaviour, lifestyle, and technology (Statistics Canada, 2012)
